What can I expect at my first session?

Your first session will include a comprehensive assessment and a customized treatment plan just for you.

We will extensively explore your history during the session, including the reasons for your visit, goals for therapy, your history of your previous treatment (if any), your medical history, family history, trauma, and social supports.

I will also answer any questions you have about therapy and my process. This one-on-one visit lasts roughly 90 minutes.

How often will I need to have a therapy session?
Weekly sessions most often result in the greatest transformations. However, there are times when it may be appropriate to meet more or less frequently, depending on your needs.
What is therapy?

Therapy is a treatment used to help you meet the challenges in your life when your usual coping strategies have failed.

A therapist will explore your life history, problem areas, and barriers to resolution.

A therapist might use many different types of therapy in session (e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy or mindfulness). The strategies used most widely are well-tested and based on scientific evidence.

Working together using these strategies, your experience in therapy can be life-changing!

How long will I be in therapy? The rest of my life???

No! Some therapists use interventions with several sessions (e.g., dialectical behavioral therapy), while others have an eclectic approach.

Every client is different, and the amount of time varies, too.

For instance, if a client is in crisis, sessions might occur weekly until the situation is resolved, reducing to biweekly or monthly after that. Ultimately, I will use clinical judgment and your needs to determine the best number of sessions. The goal is for you to have the tools to move on without me.

What’s the difference between counseling, therapy, psychotherapy, and coaching?

Counseling, therapy, and psychotherapy are pretty much different words for the same thing. Each therapist (or counselor or psychotherapist) often has a different approach to the therapeutic process. But, regardless of what you call it, that process is the same: breaking through what hinders you from reaching your full potential.

However, coaching is different. There is no licensing requirement for coaches, although many licensed professionals offer coaching services.

It is important to research the training and credentials of any practitioner you consider. Finding the right fit for you can make all the difference in your progress!

So, do I come to therapy and talk, and you just sit there and listen? You write notes? Say “mmm-hmm” a lot?
No! There are plenty of therapists who are like that if that’s your jam. I like therapy to be a conversation. There is space for quiet and times for deep listening. But, we’ll also laugh a lot. I’ll challenge you, activate you, and move you from your stuck places. It might feel uncomfortable, and you might push back. I welcome it because it’s part of the collaboration. We’re partners with the shared goal of having you reach your full potential. Let’s get it.
Do I have to tell you everything?
This is not a CIA investigation; it’s therapy! You are in the driver’s seat. I’m just next to you, holding the road map.
What if I have nothing left in me? What if I’m too tired to do anything “fun” or “joyful,” as you say?
We start where you are. And – there is always something. Always. You got here, didn’t you? And read this long FAQ page? That’s what I thought.
